La Fortuna - Arenal Volcano

The small but lively town of La Fortuna is dominated by the Arenal Volcano, whose perfect cone forms a picturesque backdrop only 8 km (5 mi) away. In 1968, the volcano suddenly exploded after 400 years of zero activity, and attracted volcanologists from all over the world,

followed later by many tourists. It is said to be one of the most active volcanoes of the world. On clear days, you can see the top of the youngest volcano (about 7,000 to 8,000 years) of Costa Rica. Since 2010, there have not been any volcanic eruptions, but a column of smoke is almost always visible.

Fun attractions in this area include hot springs, horseback riding, quad tours, hiking, bike tours, river rafting trips, and canopy zip line tours.
